UV Water Treatment as a Home-System Add-On
UV can be an added treatment step when a home needs disinfection, often as part of a well-water plan. It does not replace filtration, softening or certified lab testing.
A specific job in the plan
UV is considered when the water and the testing support it.
Upright Water Co’s system
A treatment add-on when your home needs it.
UV is a specific step in a test-based water-treatment plan, not a replacement for softening, filtration or certified lab testing. A 5-micron sediment pre-filter protects a UV unit and the rest of the system.
System features
- A 5-micron sediment pre-filter protects the UV unit and the rest of the system.
- UV does not remove hardness or dissolved solids.
Not intended for treating water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality without adequate disinfection before or after the system.

What UV does
Light treatment is not a filter
UV treatment exposes water to ultraviolet light as it passes through a chamber. Its job is disinfection, not removing dissolved material. It does not catch sediment in a filter bed or exchange hardness minerals. That is why we describe it as an add-on rather than a replacement for every other part of a water system.
A home that needs UV may also need treatment before the UV chamber. The plan has to consider the water entering it, the way the household uses water and the equipment guidelines. We explain what each stage does. More stages are not automatically better; the useful question is whether a stage has a clear purpose for that water.
What it does not do
Separate disinfection from other concerns
UV does not soften hard water. It does not remove iron, dissolved solids or sulfur odor. It does not take the place of sediment treatment. If those are the problems you notice, they need their own test-based discussion. A UV unit should not be sold as a way to fix every complaint at a tap.
UV also does not tell you whether the water is safe. Testing answers that question; equipment does a treatment job. For a private well, use a certified lab for bacteria and nitrates. An in-home screening is not a lab analysis, and a clear glass of water is not evidence that the well is free of a microbiological concern.
Hardness
Softening is a different job. UV leaves hardness minerals in the water.
Iron, odor and sediment
Well-focused treatment is chosen from the water results, not replaced by UV.
Disinfection
UV is a specific additional step when the home and water need it.
Start with evidence
Screen at home, use a lab when needed
Our free in-home screening checks hardness, chlorine and TDS. We come to your home, explain the results and there is no obligation. Those readings can help begin the treatment conversation, but they do not test for bacteria or nitrates. We keep that boundary clear rather than describing a screening as a full water-safety analysis.
The EPA recommends yearly private-well testing for total coliform bacteria, nitrates, TDS and pH. It also advises testing when conditions change. If lab results point to a concern, the next step is a suitable water-specific plan, not simply adding a lamp and ignoring the rest of the system. Keep the lab report available when discussing UV.
System planning
Put the treatment steps in a useful order
The UV chamber needs water conditions that suit its operating instructions. Sediment and other well-water concerns may need attention earlier in the treatment path. We discuss the existing equipment and the proposed order before installation. Tell us about bypassed filters or recent well work so the recommendation does not rely on an incomplete picture.
Installation is performed by a licensed plumber we partner with.
For city-water homes, the Upright Whole-Home Softener + Carbon System is our usual softening and filtration option. It is not a disinfection system. UV is considered separately when there is a reason for it; we do not automatically add it to every combined system.
Follow the guidelines
Ongoing operation matters too
A UV system requires attention to its lamp, chamber and operating instructions. Follow the schedule for the selected unit rather than a general internet rule. If an alert appears or operation is interrupted, use the equipment guidance and ask for help. Do not assume that water passing through an inactive chamber has been treated.
Annual service and filter care can be part of keeping the overall arrangement in working order. Ask what applies to the UV unit and the treatment before it. We discuss those needs with the recommendation so they are not a surprise after installation. Lab testing and treatment care remain separate responsibilities for a well owner.

Learn moreDoes UV remove hardness or dissolved solids?
No. UV is a disinfection step; it does not soften water or remove dissolved solids.
Does every private well need UV?
No automatic recommendation fits every well. Use the test results and a water-specific plan to decide whether UV belongs.
Does the free test prove I need UV?
No. Our free screening checks hardness, chlorine and TDS. Bacteria and nitrates need certified lab testing.
Can UV replace my well-water filters?
No. Iron, sulfur odor and sediment are different treatment jobs, and the water entering UV must suit its guidelines.
Is service still needed?
Yes. Follow the selected unit’s operating and maintenance instructions and ask about annual system care.
