Upright Water Co’s system

Scale protection, no salt, no waste.

Upright Water Co’s salt-free conditioner keeps hardness minerals from sticking as scale. It protects water heaters, dishwashers, faucets, showerheads and plumbing while keeping calcium and magnesium in the water.

System features

  • No brine tank, salt, drain or electricity.
  • Virtually maintenance-free conditioning for scale protection.
  • Keeps calcium and magnesium in the water; it does not remove hardness.
  • Recommended for city water. Well homes get tested first for a well-specific plan.
  • Not a true softener: no softer-feel or spot-free promise.

An honest distinction

Salt-free does not mean softened water

A true softener uses ion exchange to remove hardness minerals from water. A salt-free conditioner takes a different approach: it aims to reduce scale without removing those minerals. The hardness reading remains. That is an important difference if your goal is genuinely soft water rather than a different way to manage buildup.

Do not choose from the name alone. Salt-free sounds simple, but it does not promise the same result as softening. If you want the changes associated with removing hardness, tell us that before choosing equipment. We can compare the conditioner with the Upright Whole-Home Softener + Carbon System so the choice reflects your goals rather than a label.

Who it fits

Consider the water and what you want

The salt-free whole-home option is for city water only, not private wells. City-water customers still need a tap test because a municipal average is not a reading from their home. We check hardness, chlorine and TDS, then talk through the concern you want to address. The visit is free, there is no obligation, and we come to you.

A homeowner who wants a salt-free conditioning approach may find it worth discussing. Someone who wants true softening may prefer the combined softener and carbon system. Neither answer should be chosen from a neighbor’s equipment alone. Your water, existing treatment and household priorities are what make the comparison useful.

Set expectations

Keep the separate treatment jobs clear

Conditioning is not the same job as carbon filtration or reverse osmosis. A conditioner does not turn a dissolved-solids reading into a report of what is safe to drink. It is not a disinfection step. If taste at the kitchen sink is the main concern, drinking-water treatment may be a separate discussion rather than a reason to choose salt-free conditioning.

Ask what the proposed arrangement targets and what it leaves alone. Hardness minerals remain with this option, so do not judge it by a promise of soft water. We explain where it fits in a whole-home plan and whether another treatment job is needed. If there is no useful fit, we will say so.

01

True softening

Ion exchange removes hardness minerals. This is the softening part of the primary combined system.

02

Salt-free conditioning

A separate city-water option that aims to reduce scale while minerals remain.

03

Drinking water

Under-sink RO focuses on the water used for drinking and cooking, not the whole house.

Plan before choosing

Whole-home placement and practical access

A whole-home arrangement treats incoming water before it is used around the house. Planning includes the available space, household flow and room to reach the equipment later. Show us any system that is already installed. An existing softener or filter changes the discussion, even if it has been bypassed or has not been serviced.

Installation is performed by a licensed plumber we partner with.

We explain the proposed layout and the system guidelines before you commit. Do not disconnect existing treatment just because the word salt-free sounds easier. First decide which water concern needs attention and whether conditioning is the right approach. That keeps the recommendation grounded in the job the equipment is meant to do.

Ongoing support

No salt tank does not mean no care

A salt-free option avoids softener salt upkeep, but it still has operating and maintenance instructions. Follow the guidance for the actual equipment. If water use or the source changes, discuss that change rather than assuming the original recommendation still applies. Keep the equipment documents where you can find them.

Upright Water Co offers annual service and filter care. Ask what applies to the conditioner and any filters used alongside it. We do not use one generic care schedule for every treatment approach. A free in-home test is the starting point for the initial choice, and a clear explanation of upkeep is part of understanding that choice.

FAQ

Questions about salt-free systems

More questions

Is a salt-free conditioner a real softener?

No. It does not remove hardness minerals. It aims to reduce scale, while an ion-exchange softener removes hardness.

Can I use this salt-free option on a private well?

No. Upright’s salt-free option is for city water only. Well-water treatment starts with a separate test-based plan.

Will my hardness reading go down?

Not from conditioning alone. The hardness minerals remain, which is why we distinguish conditioning from true softening.

Does it replace RO for drinking water?

No. Conditioning and under-sink RO do different jobs. We can discuss drinking-water treatment if that is your main concern.

How do I choose between salt-free and the combined system?

Start with a free in-home hardness, chlorine and TDS test. We compare the approaches against the results and your household goals.
